The Timber Creek Campground in RMNP

RMNP’s Timber Creek Campground

Rocky Mountain National Park’s west side campground, the Timber Creek Campground, is open for the season. Sitting at an elevation of 8,900 feet, this campground is located along the Colorado River headwaters in the scenic Kawuneeche Valley, and features 98 campsites for both tent and RV camping.

To get to the Timber Creek Campground, take Trail Ridge Road (U.S. Highway 34) about 10 miles north of Grand Lake and watch for signs to the campground.

Camping at Timber Creek is always first-come, first-served, with no reservations taken. The campgrounds are rarely full, however. More often than not there are plenty of nice campsites available, even when other campgrounds may be full – and even on the busier holidays, like the upcoming 4th of July weekend!

Campground features include tent pads, picnic tables, fire grates, and parking for 1 vehicle per site. Amenities include fresh running water, restrooms, firewood sales, food storage boxes, and an RV dump station. Handicap-accessible campsites are available as well. Plenty of hiking is available in the area, with several hiking trails beginning at or near Timber Creek. The campground even has a small outdoor amphitheater, where rangers present programs and seminars about the park during summer months.

Many species of wildlife inhabit the park, and sightings around Timber Creek are not uncommon. In fact, this bull elk was enjoying a siesta in the campground just last week!

(Oh, and always remember to view wildlife from a safe distance. Never approach or feed the animals!)
