The Lake Verna Trail, a 13.5-mile out-and-back route in RMNP offers a challenging hike with rewarding views. This trail is popular for backpacking, camping, and fishing, though you can still find some solitude, especially during quieter times of the day. It typically takes around 6 hours to complete. The best time to hike this trail is from May through September, and with all trails in RMNP dogs are not allowed on this trail.

Starting from the East Inlet Trailhead, the route initially follows the East Inlet Trail, which continues beyond Lake Verna to several additional lakes. For a longer hike, you can explore the full East Inlet Trail, which leads all the way to Spirit Lake.

The trail offers several backcountry campsites, making it an excellent option for an overnight trip. Campsites include East Meadow, Lower East Inlet, Cats Lair, Cats Lair #2, Gray Jay Group Site, Slick Rock, and Lake Verna itself.

Be prepared for varying weather conditions, as mountain weather can change rapidly. Download your map ahead of time since cell service is limited in Rocky Mountain National Park. Even in summer, it's wise to prepare for wintry weather if you’re staying overnight.

Note that this route is not recommended for winter hiking. However, higher elevation sections may have snow into mid-summer, so check conditions before your trip. If you encounter snow or ice, bring spikes and snowshoes for safety.
