Winter in Grand Lake

Check Road Conditions:

Winter driving can be challenging in the mountains, so check weather and road conditions on your route. Have snow tires or chains if required, especially if you're using mountain passes like Berthoud Pass or Rabbit Ears Pass. Remember, Trail Ridge Road closes in late October and does not open until May, so travel between Estes and Grand Lake will require an alternate route.

Layer Up:

Temperatures in Grand Lake can be quite cold, so pack plenty of layers, including thermal base layers, insulated jackets, and waterproof outerwear. Don’t forget gloves, hats, and warm socks! When packing for cold wool is key, so avoid cotton or synthetic materials if you are planning time outside in the cold.

Plan for Activities:

Grand Lake offers excellent winter recreation options like snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and downhill skiing at nearby resorts (Granby Ranch and Winter Park Resort). Check out local rentals and guided tours for equipment and expertise. After a day playing outside you may need some time to rest and recover, so consider booking an appointment for a massage or snag entry passes to the natural Hot Springs located in Hot Sulphur Springs (about 30 minutes from Grand Lake).

Reserve Early:

Winter is a popular season, especially during popular winter events so book lodging, rentals, and activities in advance to secure the best options.

Stay Hydrated:

High altitude and cold weather can lead to dehydration and altitude sickness, so drink plenty of water, especially if you're engaging in outdoor activities.

Know What’s Open:

Some restaurants and attractions may have limited hours or seasonal closures, so check ahead and plan your itinerary around open businesses and activities.
