Getting to Grand Lake
Getting around the Grand Lake area is best done by car, as there are no bus lines beyond Granby and rideshare options are limited. If you're flying in, Home James offers convenient shuttle services from Denver International Airport to nearby towns, including Granby. Once you're in Grand Lake, however, getting around is easy—Grand Lake itself is only about one square mile, making it simple to explore the town on foot. You'll find restaurants, shops, and the lakefront all within walking distance, so you can fully enjoy this charming mountain town at your own pace!
From Denver via Trail Ridge Road (Summer Only)
In the summer months (typically Memorial Day through mid-October, weather permitting), you can take Trail Ridge Road through Rocky Mountain National Park for a scenic route to Grand Lake. Starting in Denver, head north on I-25 to US-36 West toward Estes Park. Enter Rocky Mountain National Park via the Beaver Meadows Entrance and follow Trail Ridge Road (US-34) west across the Continental Divide to Grand Lake. Note that a timed entry reservation is required to enter Rocky Mountain National Park during the summer season, even for pass-through traffic.
From Denver via Berthoud Pass (Year-Round)
For year-round access, head west on I-70 from Denver, take exit 232 for US-40 West toward Winter Park, and follow US-40 over Berthoud Pass. Continue on US-40 through Winter Park and Granby. At Granby, turn right onto US-34 North, which takes you directly into Grand Lake.
From Silverthorne via Kremmling (Highway 9)
If you’re traveling from the I-70 corridor near Silverthorne, take CO-9 North to Kremmling. From Kremmling, head east on US-40 toward Granby. In Granby, turn left onto US-34 North to reach Grand Lake.
From Steamboat Springs via Rabbit Ears Pass
From Steamboat Springs, take US-40 East over Rabbit Ears Pass to Kremmling. Continue on US-40 toward Granby, then turn left onto US-34 North at Granby to reach Grand Lake.
Via Train to Granby
The Amtrak California Zephyr line offers a scenic and convenient way to reach the Grand Lake area, with a stop in Granby, just 20 minutes from town. Known for its breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains, the Zephyr line runs between Chicago and San Francisco, passing through some of Colorado’s most stunning landscapes. Once you arrive in Granby, it’s a short drive up US-34 North to reach Grand Lake, where you can enjoy the lake, trails, and charming mountain town atmosphere. The Zephyr line is a great option for a relaxed, scenic journey to the Rockies!
