Shadow Mountain Reservoir
Located in-between Grand Lake and Lake Granby is the scenic Shadow Mountain Reservoir, covering more than 1,300 acres of surface area. Possibly one of the most underrated lakes in Colorado, Shadow Mountain Lake is connected to Grand Lake via a narrow waterway providing a serene, shallow area for non-motorized and small motorized boats to pass through. The east side of the lake is flanked on one side by Rocky Mountain National Park, home to the lake’s namesake peak which stands at just over 10,000 feet in elevation.
Shadow Mountain Reservoir, connected to Grand Lake by a gentle channel that flows under the iconic Rainbow Bridge, is a beautiful, nature-rich destination for water and wildlife enthusiasts. With boat ramps located at Green Ridge and Shadow Mountain Dam, the reservoir is accessible for all types of watercraft. The reservoir is especially attractive for kayakers and paddle boarders who can explore its small, serene islands—some open for exploration and others protected as wildlife habitats (be sure to check the signs). The islands provide a unique opportunity to spot local birdlife, including pelicans, cranes, geese, and osprey. Because the water is relatively shallow, it’s also common to see moose wading or even swimming around the islands, and on rare occasions, a bear may make an appearance.
Fly fishing and line fishing are both popular activities on Shadow Mountain reservoir, thanks to an abundance of brown trout in its cold, clear waters. A Colorado fishing license (cost varies, see our Fishing page for details) is required and can be purchased at the Beacon Landing Marina on Lake Granby or Kirk’s Flyshop in Grand Lake, Colorado.
Above, the historic Shadow Mountain Lookout Tower watches over the area, adding a bit of history to the scenic views. The East Shore Trail runs year-round along the reservoir, accessible from Jericho Road Trailhead and Green Ridge Campground. Visitors can also camp at Green Ridge Campground for a closer experience with the beauty and serenity of Shadow Mountain Reservoir.
Located on the south end of Shadow Mountain Reservoir, the Green Ridge Campground has 78 non-electric campsites for tent and RV camping. Restrooms, drinking water, trash service, fire rings and picnic tables are provided, and two boat ramps are available. Dogs are allowed on leashes., and with all Arapaho National Forest camping sites, fees are required and reservations are recommended.
