Dog Friendly Trails

Remember – Pets are not allowed on trails in Rocky Mountain National Park. Leave your furry companion at home if you plan on trekking RMNP. Not to worry though, there is plenty of dog friendly trails for you to enjoy – here’s some of our favorites.

Grand Lake Recreation District

The trails by the Grand Lake Golf Course make for an easy day out only a couple of minutes away from downtown. This area is especially ideal if you want to get your dog on a trail without traveling far.

For dogs that like to go untethered, off-leash is allowed as long as your pup is under voice control.

Dogs are permitted on all 15 miles of trails. These scenic trails vary in length and difficulty, including short loops and a 6-mile round trip hike.

When your dog (or you) needs a break, take in the beautiful wetlands, mountains and Colorado River at one of several picnic areas and benches situated around the trails.

Arapaho National Forest Area

Down the road, dogs are allowed in all areas of Arapaho National Forest with a leash. If you’re not sure where to go, you should check out Monarch Lake. Monarch Lake is a 4 mile loop around a stunning lake with mountain views. With little elevation gain, this is the perfect day out for the casual hiker.

While out on your hike, you might see some abandoned antique logging equipment. This equipment hails back to the logging industry that once drove Grand County’s economy. Kid’s love ‘finding’ this equipment – if you’d like to see it at the beginning of your hike make sure to head over the bridge toward the right.

Don’t get too distracted by the antiques though, as you should also keep a sharp eye out for moose. Monarch Lake is a favorite munching area for the moose as they love the dense, wet vegetation that encompasses the lake. Remember, moose feel threatened by dogs, so be on high alert!

If you’ve got a doggo with extra energy, head up County Road 4 toward Stillwater Pass for tons of room to roam. There’s more than enough space for even the most active canine.

For the water pups, Willow Creek is a great spot to swim. Only non-motorized boating is allowed on Willow Creek Reservoir and makes for a great splash for dogs and humans alike.

Like A Local: Make sure to get an Arapaho National Recreation day pass before heading to the trail. Passes are $5 for the day and the closest location to buy prior to heading to Monarch Lake is immediately after you turn onto Country Road 6, in the parking area by Lake Granby.
