The hike to Big Meadow from the Kawuneeche Visitor Center offers an 8.4-mile loop that provides a scenic and moderately challenging route through diverse landscapes. This trail features an elevation gain of 680 feet and can also be accessed from the Green Mountain Trailhead, where hikers will experience a mostly downhill-to-flat finish. Opting to start from the Kawuneeche Visitor Center provides a slightly longer but equally rewarding route.
The trail meanders through lush, marshy Big Meadow and traverses forests of lodgepole pine, quaking aspen, subalpine fir, and Engelmann spruce. This route is particularly notable for its wildlife sightings—moose are commonly seen, and elk are often spotted grazing, especially in the morning and late afternoon. As hikers journey through the meadow, they can explore the remains of early settler cabins, adding a historical element to the hike. The loop trail also features vibrant foliage in the fall, making it a picturesque destination during this season.
Be aware that this area was affected by the East Troublesome Fire in 2020, which may present additional hazards in the burn areas. Park visitors should exercise caution and be mindful of potential trail hazards.
