The Granite Falls via Green Mountain Trail, a 10.1-mile out-and-back route in RMNP. Known for its moderate difficulty, this trail is a favorite among backpackers, campers, and anglers, yet you can still find solitude during quieter times of the day. The optimal time to tackle this trail is between May and October, and with all trails in RMNP dogs are not permitted on this trail.

Starting from the Green Mountain Trailhead parking lot, which offers restrooms, the hike begins with a gradual ascent alongside a creek. The trail is suitable for a variety of experiences, making it a fantastic choice for a brisk day hike or an overnight stay. As you continue, you’ll reach Tonahutu Meadows, an expansive open area where Tonahutu Creek meanders. The trail parallels the creek, offering scenic views and access to several backcountry sites such as Sunrise, Sunset, Lower Granite Falls, and Upper Granite Falls.

The highlight of the trail is the impressive Granite Falls, which you’ll encounter around the 3.5-mile mark. Prepare for a bit of a challenge with significant elevation gain, especially during the initial 1.5 miles as you climb toward the meadow.

If you’re considering a winter hike, be aware that conditions can be harsh. Snowshoes, microspikes, or crampons may be necessary depending on the snow and ice conditions. Keep a close eye on weather and avalanche forecasts, and be sure to dress in layers and have an emergency plan ready.
