The Haynach Lake Trail, a 17.1-mile out-and-back route in RMNP is renowned for its difficulty and is ideal for seasoned backpackers, campers, and anglers seeking solitude. With a typical completion time of just under 8 hours, it offers a challenge but rewards with stunning alpine beauty. The best time to hike this trail is from June through September, though you’ll need to leave your dogs at home, as they are not allowed on this trail.
Starting from the Green Mountain Trailhead, this trail guides you through the breathtaking Big Meadows and Tonahutu Creek areas. The journey takes you above treeline, where you’ll find the pristine Haynach Lakes nestled at over 11,000 feet below Nakai Peak.
The route features several excellent backcountry campsites along the way, making it a flexible option for an overnight adventure. Additionally, there is a backcountry campsite right at Haynach Lakes, offering an exceptional setting for camping under the stars.
Note that snow and ice may linger on the trail well into the summer months. Depending on conditions, you might need crampons, microspikes, or snowshoes to navigate the snowy sections safely. Be prepared for rapidly changing weather; conditions can shift to severe storms or wintery weather at any time, even in summer. Afternoon thunderstorms are common and can arrive unexpectedly, so it’s crucial to plan to return below treeline before early afternoon to avoid dangerous conditions.
