The Little Yellowstone Trail is a 12.2-mile out-and-back route in RMNP. This challenging hike typically takes around 5.5 hours to complete and is suitable for hiking and horseback riding. It's a less trafficked trail which offers a more secluded experience. The best time to hike this trail is from May through October, and with all RMNP trails dogs are not allowed.
Begin your adventure by heading north on the Colorado River Trailhead. This path will take you through the scenic Coyote Valley and along the Colorado River. You'll pass through lush meadows and cross multiple creeks. Wildlife such as elk, moose, and bears are often seen grazing in the grasslands along the river.
The trail continues past the historic Lulu City Site and Cemetery, where some remnants of the historic settlement are still visible in some spots. After visiting Lulu City, continue along the Colorado River Trail until you reach a junction. Here, take the right fork onto the Little Yellowstone Trail, which leads towards La Poudre Pass. While the trail does not reach La Poudre Pass, you can extend your hike by connecting with the Grand Ditch Trail to reach the Pass and Ranger Station.
The Little Yellowstone Trail is known for its volcanic landscape, a result of past volcanic activity in the park. The trail ascends through towering pines and steep terrain until you reach the summit of Little Yellowstone. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with expansive views of the Never Summer Mountains to the west.
Since the trail is mostly exposed, be prepared for varying weather conditions and bring appropriate gear.
