The Monarch Lake Loop is a 4.0-mile trail that offers an easy hike through Arapaho National Forest and the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. This scenic loop takes approximately 1 hour and 21 minutes to complete. It provides extraordinary views of north-central Colorado and follows the edge of Monarch Lake, with additional routes along Cascade Creek and Arapaho Pass Trails.
The trail takes hikers through forested areas and includes crossings of Arapaho and Buchanan Creeks, as well as several runoff streams. All turns are well-marked, making navigation straightforward. The lake area and trailhead are ideal for relaxing, picnicking, and fishing, with bathroom facilities available at the trailhead. Many hikers also enjoying viewing the antique logging equipment scattered alongside the trail - a sign of the original use of the Lake.
The Monarch Lake Loop is also popular for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, although the road to the trailhead often closes seasonally. Visitors are advised to check road conditions and be prepared for winter conditions, including potential avalanche danger. Avalanche safety training and rescue equipment are recommended for those venturing into the Colorado backcountry during winter months.
Due to its popularity, parking can be limited, especially on weekends and peak times. To minimize impact on parking and trail use, visitors are encouraged to explore the trail during weekdays or off-peak hours. The parking area, located near the ranger station, accommodates approximately 40 vehicles and provides access to additional trails in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. Dogs are allowed on the trail but are not permitted to swim in the lake.
